I was in a training recently that was just awful. The trainer had a lot of material to cover and we didn’t get through it all. But they weren’t the reason it was awful.
One of the other participants had been working in this area before and came in with the attitude that they knew everything. (Spoiler: they didn’t.) They interrupted the trainer, answered other people’s questions rather than letting the trainer do it, and spoke badly of the trainer during breaks.
I had also worked in this area before but I came in with an attitude that I didn’t know it all. Instead of the frustration I could see this person causing (for themselves and others), I found out the pieces that I didn’t know, learned more about what was changing in this field, and made positive connections in the breaks. I also stayed a bit late to get the info we didn’t cover so I would be ahead for the next part.
Sometimes training isn’t the best, but it’s all about what you bring to the table that leads to the best results. As you grow in your career, I hope you can keep the attitude of “always learning” so you come away from experiences like this in a healthy way – and not be that person in the room.
